Hacking Nature in Chemnitz: International Presentation & Workshop

In June 2024, I carried out an international mobility to Chemnitz (DE) as part of the festival Makers United, which forms a key component of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 programme. Supported by the Slovak Arts Council (FPU), the mobility enabled me to present the ongoing research project Hacking Nature, which explores intersections between ecological design, architecture, and microalgae biotechnology.

During the four-day festival in Stadthalle Chemnitz, I presented a site-specific exhibition, led a public lecture, and facilitated interactive workshops dedicated to the role of microalgae, microbial ecosystems, and interdisciplinary collaboration in sustainable design. The displayed artefacts included microalgae cultivation units, scientific tools, and didactic objects designed to introduce visitors of all ages to environmental biotechnologies. Alongside the exhibition, I created educational materials, an infographic, and a children’s pexeso illustrating microbial species.

The programme attracted several hundred visitors, engaging children, students, professionals and residents of the Saxony region. Workshops focused on hands-on demonstrations such as biomass extraction, microscopy, and discussions about greenwashing in design and technology. The lecture introduced current research on microalgae systems in architecture and their potential environmental applications.

A significant part of the mobility involved networking with international experts, including country representatives and makers working across digital fabrication, bioplastics, and ecological innovation. These exchanges opened space for future collaborations within the European Capital of Culture programme and beyond.
